BPSD: IT is an IT Specialist Company that provides technical repairs, services and sell retail brand products. It has an e-commerce website, where the primary purpose seems to aid the needs of users online who want buy IT hardware and software components. The secondary purpose of the website appears to be to provide technical advice, through a contact form. The two purposes and the website as a whole, show that maybe it is aimed at people who use computers or possibly work in an IT related field. However, it is very difficult to judge whether the website is aimed at a single demographic group.
The focal Problem with the website is that its structure seems very weak and confusing. While viewing the home page I found that the left side of the page contained many navigational sections. However a user would have to scroll down to the bottom in order to view the information section or either search for a product. The consequences may mean a novice user may not be able to find the search button and have no option to find a specific product type.
The second problem that I found was a lack of accessibility. The problem lied within the creation of the website, as they were no adjustments made to the page when the text size had been adjusted; via the web toolbar. This could result in potential users with a vision disability not being able to read or see images on the website, thus losing a specific demographic group.
A website is required to ‘fulfil its purpose’, which is another focal disadvantage of BPSD: IT, in comparison to other websites who succeed. BPSD: IT offer users to view particular IT products and purchase them. The process seems systematically straight forward and simple to understand. However, it lacks accessibility when navigating through the production process, as it can be picked up by the security software as harmful; thus stopping my transaction process. This can be quite frustrating and time consuming for a user.
However, a positive obtained from the website is that it provides a category on the left side of the home page, which can reduce the amount of time searching for a product. This facility is useful when a user does not know what there product is called, but knows what category it may come under. The Products category can also be seen as the main feature demonstrating that it is an IT e-commerce website, which is useful when getting across to the user; the initial purpose of the website.
One task carried out was to test the efficiency and purpose for buying a product, which I chose LCD monitors. I selected the LCD category, and chose a ‘Scenicview ‘monitor. I clicked buy now which took me to the basket; were I confirmed my order. When I reached the checkout I had to fill in my details and later confirm my payment through a secure payment system. If a mistake occurred I could easily amend sections.
The other task I carried out was to retrieve advice on a problem. I selected consulting and typed in a breif problem in the section provided. I added in my name and contact details. I found this straight forward and easy to understand.
